The sensorimotor stage (birth to age 2 years) The preoperational stage (ages 2 to 7 years) Concrete operational stage (ages 7 to 12 yrs) The formal operational stage (age 12 and beyond) Before 1920s no recognizable field of cognitive development. Plausible depiction nature and nurture in cognitive development. Nature and nurture interact to yield cognitive development. Adaption : tendency to respond to the demands of the e(cid:374)(cid:448)iro(cid:374)(cid:373)e(cid:374)t to (cid:373)eet o(cid:374)e"s goals. Organization : tendency to integrate particular observations into coherent knowledge. Three processes work together from birth to propel development forward. Assimilation: process by which people translate incoming information into a form they can understand. Accommodation: process by which people adapt current knowledge structures in response to new experiences.
