There is a significant influx of mentally disordered individuals coming into contact with the corrections system: 2/5 people with mental illness have been arrested. 10% of federal offenders are mentally disordered. More female offenders have mental health issues compared to male offenders. Personality disorders are substantially higher prevalent within prisons compared to community populations. The amount of people within the mental health and corrections systems is a constant and where they end up is a policy of public funding. This is called the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill: ex: the number of inpatient beds has significantly dropped. 1964 4 beds for every 1000. 1974 1 bed for every 1000: the effects on the prison population. Offenders experience much greater mental health symptoms.
