PSYC 3506 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Explicit Memory, Episodic Memory, Habituation
Document Summary
Store things like what we saw, how we felt, etc. Ex. dog barks when phone rings, pick up phone when dog barks. Formed from about 6 - 8 months of age onward. Measured using both physiological and behavioral responses. Kids shown pics of kids they a few years ago. Some accuracy in skin conductivity where there was more activity if child were famliar. We see evidence of recognition from birth. Preference for novelty can be taken as an indication of memory (habituation/dishabituation) 6-month-olds can demonstrate memory over two week delays. If you show them a distinct shape until habituated, then bring back 2 weeks later and show same image, they"ll show more rapid habituation to that image than they did initially. Preference for the familiar is also taken as an indication of memory. As early as 1-month of age, infants can demonstrate memory over 3 day delays. Sucking rate adjusts based on whether they recognize hearing the nursery rhyme again.
