Race and ethnicity, bases of social inequalities and social interactions in society in groups and individuals. There is no biological basis for race but racism is real. Race and racism - not the same thing. Racial categories as historically and culturally contingent. Edward bruner (1996) tourism in ghana- interviewed african americans going to ghana from us because of the slave trade. Discovered that ghanaians referred to many african americans as white. Race is based primarily upon genetically imparted physiological attributes . Stats canada, wide range of class verification. Race is a product of socio-historical- not scientific process. Human racial populations are not unambiguous, clearly demarcated, biologically distinct groups. People/ organizations may use race as if it does reflect biological differences. Arbitrary biological traits used to delineate races can be conceptualized as racialized expressions of biology. Politics of race and racism play a key role. Identification and recognition of contemporary and historical injustices and inequalities.
