The point: research methods are reliable, trustworthy knowledge of the social world and society. Wide variety of methods to be used. Different types of knowledge of social world. Depending on research with determine what research method is used. Ex: changes in suicide rate- statistical, analyze data. Different approaches to theory, things can be tested and proved or receive the research that is needed. Studying the social world is different than studying the actual world, social world has different variations due to people being unpredictable. Exploratory/ interpretive method, understanding the social world and social processes, rather than just proving and disproving hypothesis. Social science: sociology arguments that it is not a real science compared to anthropology, psychology. Quantitative knowledge: social phenomenon that can be counted, quantified and measured. Auguste comte and durkheim (suicide study with statistics) Study of social facts (suicide rate, homicide rate) Qualitative knowledge: things that are not able to be measured or counted, experiences specifically.
