Researcher must identify definition of the situation. Highly complex social settings that can affect outcome of an experiment. Research approaches key developing theories and testing for a bigger macro picture of why things happen. Truth is objective reality and definitions of what is being studied need to be objective. There are different underlying philosophies in qualitative and quantitiative reaserach. Quanititatve research is more rooted in positivism: 3 main attributes: Realism: belief that reality is out there waiting to be discovered. Objective of social science: uncover laws" of human behaviour to get truth about social life: durkheim called social facts" individuals, observable and measurable general laws or premises. Causal knowledge: belief world is made of causes and effects external to. Deductive reasoning: uses process of inference to get conclusions from. Ensure there is a random sample of community for no bias. Then infer what it means for general population.
