Most theories disproportionately assume that most violent crimes come from low economic backgrounds. 1989 - prevalence of self reported felony were twice as high for lower class youth than middle class youth. Link between anti social behavior and poverty --> social mediators can reduce it. Cohen and delinquent boys: lower class boys found it hard to succeed by middle class standards. Disproportionate o ending comes from low economic areas: peer in uences: Zimmering & reese: most crimes between small groups (not big gangs) Cambridge study: prob of committing crimes with others decreases with age (older you get more likely commit crimes on your own) --> having delinquent friends at age 14 was a a predictor of crime. Repeat o enders and desisters di ered --> prosocial and positive in uences will increase desistance. Seattle social development project: being part of a gang predicted more o enses and more often (more so then delinquent peers)
