Very different than boys at risk, personal or individualized for girls, risk of pregnancy, low self esteem, etc. Since 19th century main concern around girlhood by adults is the innocence of the child. Debate about children born naturally innocent" but corrupted by society or neither good or bad. Both accounts emphasize innocence, neither recognize how innocence of childhood is gendered. Initially feminist characterized girlhood as formative years between childhood and adulthood. Second wave feminist, 1980s girlhood time girls prepare for womanhood rather than identify in its own right. Female adolescents referred to as young women" rather than girls".
