ANTH 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Racialization, Part Of Speech, Mechanical And Organic Solidarity
Document Summary
Anth 202 lesson 12: social groups and stratification. A social group is a cluster of people beyond the domestic unit who are usually related on grounds other than kinship, although kinship relationships may exist between people in the group. Members of all social groups have a sense of rights and responsibilities in relation to the group which, if not maintained, could mean loss of membership. Membership has a face to face nature. Membership in a primary group involves more direct accountability about rights and responsibilities than secondary group membership. Distinction between informal groups and formal groups. Informal groups are smaller and less visible: members of informal groups have close, face-to-face relationships with one another, while members of formal groups may or may not know each other, organizational structure is less hierarchical in informal groups. Modes of economies seem to affect the proliferation of social groups, the greatest variety being found in agricultural and industrial societies.
