COMM 205 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Channel State Information, The Sender, Liquid Oxygen
Document Summary
Understanding the nature of communication and its barriers in the digital age: Although people are sending more messages and using new technologies in this digital age, the basic communication process still remains the same. The sender comes up with the purpose of the message and encodes message by expressing the purpose. It travels verbally over channels or express nonverbally with gestures or body language. Noise such as, loud sounds, misspelled words, and other distraction can interfere with transmission. The receiver decodes the message and may respond with feedback, informing the sender of the effectiveness of the message. Barriers such as; bypassing different frame of reference, lack of language skills and distractions, can create a misunderstanding between sender and receiver. The process is only successful if the receiver understood what the massage intended. Improve listening skills: realize communication is imperfect, anticipate in the problem, arrange ideas logically and use precise language, encourage feedback. Business writing should be: purposeful, economical, audience orientated.
