Freud: the id and the superego are unconscious. This means that it is difficult to retrieve material from these components. They are well below the surface of awareness: all psychic energy originates in the unconscious. With repression, desires are held in the recesses of the dynamic unconscious: freudian slips: freud looked for evidence of the unconscious in speech errors and lapses of consciousness. Forgetting the name of someone you dislike is not a random error but instead has some surplus meaning created by an intelligent unconscious, even if the person consciously disavows the thoughts and memories that caused the error. Dream analysis: manifest content: literal meaning, latent content: underlying meaning, wish fulfillment: symbolic expression of a wish.
