THEO 333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Mass (Liturgy), Psalms, God Speaks
Document Summary
Marriage is the sacrament instituted by jesus christ that establishes a holy and indissoluble union between man and woman, giving them the grace to love each other faithfully and to educate their children christianly. In order to validly contract the marriage, it is necessary to be free of any impediments and to freely express one"s consent in front of the designated assistant (usually the pastor) and two witnesses. It is also necessary to be sufficiently educated on the truths of faith and morals, in particular on what are the essential properties of marriage. They are unity, which excludes polygamy; indissolubility, which excludes divorce; and openness to fertility, which excludes the will not to beget. The contracting parties are required to be in a state of grace and receive the sacrament with faith and devotion. By divine and natural law, any sexual union is lawful only in the legitimate marriage between man and woman.
