BIOL 1011 Lecture 2: Bio 1011 1.2
Document Summary
Lecture 2: major groups of land plants and their reproduction. Recall the features of all land plants: cuticle, sporopollenin, multicellular sex organs (antheridia, archegonia), embryophyte condition, alternation of generations (multicellular diploid to multicellular haploid). The gametes of animals are haploid phase, and they can unite with another haploid gamete in the process of fertilization. When it"s ready to unite with another cell, you can call it a gamete. So, a plus could meet up with a minus, and they fuse to form a zygote, which undergoes meiosis, making 4 cells, 2 of which are plus mating type, 2 are minus. They can either enter the sexual cycle, or they can be asexual. You would have to delay the zygote meiotically, so that it can divide mitotically to become a multicellular structure. I. e. zygote delays meiosis instead it divides and grows multicellular diploid.
