So, a plus could meet up with a minus, and they fuse to form a zygote, which undergoes meiosis, making 4 cells, 2 of which are plus mating type, 2 are minus. They can either enter the sexual cycle, or they can be asexual. You would have to delay the zygote meiotically, so that it can divide mitotically to become a multicellular structure. I. e. zygote delays meiosis instead it divides and grows multicellular diploid.
