Document Summary

Econ 1102 - lecture #3 - chapter 19 continued, beginning chapter 20. Inaccuracy of unemployment rate: if we implemented less rigid labour forces, it would make it easier to find a job; 2 groups of workers: discouraged workers: people who say they want a job but have not made the effort, involuntary part-time worker: people who would like to work full-time but can only find part-time work. Cpi calculation: an index measuring the price of a fixed market basket of goods and services that is bought by a typical consumer, basket of goods might include: computers, medical cost, travel costs; Cpi = 100 x cost of basket in current year. Cost of basket in base year: we cannot change the quantities in the basket, it must remain constant. The inflation rate is the percentage change in the cpi in the previous year: (115 100)/100 x100= 15% (130 115)/115 x100= 13%
