Definitions: lay person: anyone who is not an expert, expert: someone with certain credentials. 2 broad approaches to studying the expert-lay divide: lay and expert perspectives are intrinsically different. Challenge to medicine control over health care. Growing mistrust of experts generally obsessed with risks in society, but at the same time that technology is actually increasing risks and creating new health problems. Science cannot protect us from the risks that face us. Also concern that science and medicine can cause risks. Emphasizes need to understand and respect lay knowledge. Relativist orientation many ways of understanding health: truth is relative to the times. A lot of different ways to understanding health and all are valid in some way lay persons are just as valid as experts. Contradiction to absolute truths that get told to us through: a. (cid:858)health (cid:271)eliefs(cid:859) (cid:373)odels science. Need to understand lay peoples perspectives in order to treat them effectively.
