Document Summary

Everything of which we are aware at any given time, our thoughts, feelings, mental processes, and events outside ourselves. Altered states of consciousness: sleep, meditation, hypnosis, drug-induced state. There are four levels of nrem sleep (stages 1, 2, 3, and 4) where 1 is the lightest level of nrem sleep. Rem sleep is rapid eye movement sleep and constitutes 20-25% of adult sleep. Rem sleep there is intense brain activity; most dreaming occurs during rem sleep. Stage 1 light sleep that lasts a few minutes, low voltage, mixed frequency. Stage 2 50% of sleep occurs here, which is somewhat deeper than stage 1, sleep spindles & k complexes. Stage 3 the beginning of deep sleep, mostly slow waves. Stage 4 deepest sleep, slow waves. After we fall asleep, stage 1 sleep is replaced with rem for the duration of the night. Rem low voltage, mixed frequency + rapid eye movement & muscle atonia. Goes in cycles, eventually getting more shallow.
