PSYC 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Prenatal Development, Allosome, Longitudinal Study
Document Summary
Compare groups of different ages at same time. Heredity and prenatal development genes = basic units for transmission of hereditary traits. Chromosomes = contain genes and carry hereditary information. Dominant gene = causes dominant trait to be expressed in individual. Recessive gene = expressed if paired with another recessive gene. Major systems, organs, structures of body develop in embryo. Forms two embryos with identical genetic codes. Two eggs fertilized by two different sperm. Teratogens = agents in prenatal environment; cause birth defects and other problems. Critical period = when certain body structures develop. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (fasd) = cause by alcohol as a teratogen. Preterm infant = born at or before 37th week. Causes: poor nutrition and prenatal care, smoking, drug use, maternal infection, too short an interval between pregnancies. Neonates = newborn babies up to one month old. Reflexes = built in responses to certain stimuli needed for survival. Five senses functional at birth but not fully developed.
