Teratogens = agents in prenatal environment; cause birth defects and other problems. Critical period = when certain body structures develop. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (fasd) = cause by alcohol as a teratogen. Preterm infant = born at or before 37th week. Causes: poor nutrition and prenatal care, smoking, drug use, maternal infection, too short an interval between pregnancies. Neonates = newborn babies up to one month old. Reflexes = built in responses to certain stimuli needed for survival. Five senses functional at birth but not fully developed.
