Document Summary
-early studies contributed to our understanding of sexuality as a cultural construct occurring in a historical context. Contemporary studies examine sexuality s a core focus, it previousl was most often part of an ethnographic description of an exotic population. Links the personal and social realms, the individual and society. Within every culture sexuality is managed, like gender expression and sanctions against those who break the rules. As important as food: a person is believed to be susceptible to death without sex, and discussion of sex/sexual behaviours is common in public. If a woman doesn"t have sex, she is described as subject to anger and ruined thoughts. For both men and women sex is viewed as essential to good health and an important aspect of being human: contrast the !kung"s view of sex with the historic anglo-american view of men, women and sexuality. Prior to 17th c. women were highly sexual creatures.
