Both of which are concerned with ranking and ordering human biodiversity. Outline: historical precursors, evolutionism (morgan, critical perspectives on evolutionism (beoku-betts, historical particularism (boas) response and critique of the hierarchy within evolutionism anthropology has a geo-christian origin. It has very troubled origins which explain the blind spots and biases existing today: historical precursors. There are some tropes and understanding lying underneath what we understand as contemporary anthropology. Pigmy"s are below humans and very close to animals even though they are not true (originated in greek history) It"s about understanding the deeper historical roots of understanding the past and the present. The ways in which the past has informed the views of the people in the present. Palimpsest: document that has been copied over multiple times. Someone wrote prayers over top the equations. Metaphor of the palimpsest: if you think you"re reading one text, there is another text underneath it informing the text on top.
