Society = group of people who depend on one another for well-being. Concerned with how cultures are acquired, organized, change, adapt, and are expressed: other subfields. Applied anthropology: putting anthropology into practice (i. e. un work, ngos, corporations and marketing, ethnopsychology) Sociology vs. anthropology: sociology is historically western studies, whereas anthropology is historically the study of non-western/industrialized nations, methodological differences: sociology focuses on quantitative, anthropology on qualitative/observation via ethnography. Sociology is a more scientific" social science. Made up of learned behaviors -> not born knowing culture. Culture is shared by members of a group -> there is tension between individual psychology and cultural identity. Subject to change -> adaptive system (nonstatic: humans must change based on changes in their environments, and therefore their culture changes as well, cultures can be maladaptive, leads to cultural decline.
