Modernity, modernization > look at difference for mid term. A time of art of prostitution - showcase how perhaps prostitution was a way to survive in the city. Paris was becoming known as a place of prostitution, it was not immoral for men to go to prostitutes, it was just wrong for the women to be prostitutes. When a man got syphallis from having sex with prostitutes but then would bring it home to their wives and kids, the wife"s family would be blamed for having the disease. Prostitution was a type of sewer system. Manet"s the plum 1877: would work in a shop etc which can be seen through her outfit but suggests she may be inclined to be a prostitute by being alone in public holding a cigarette. Constantin guys - marriages and promenaders on the avenue des champs elysees: occupies a space between the old and the new because he has that intellect.
