Beautiful nymph and daughter of peneus (personified river) who wishes to remain virgin. Apollo mocks eros/cupid in olympus who shoots his gold and lead pointed arrows. Apollo: enflamed with love, lust, and longing. Daphne: dislike and distrust of men is magnified. Apollo pursues daphne who flees from him. Prays to peneus to take away her beauty. Her shape is changed into that of a laurel tree. She is willing to consummate their union and becomes pregnant.
