1791: korean christians are executed for conducting a funeral without a spirit tablet. 1800: death penalty if not followed with confucian funeral. Believe theres two sides to the story: Ancestor ritual is an important art of filial piety. The rejection of filial piety is barbaric. Wooden plaque with written name of the ancestor. Can give food and talk to spirit tablet. Is the spirit tablet an idol? (dual structure) Idol speaking to the ancestor"s spirit. Catholics this is idol worship, you can force us to do anything against our religion. Japanese this is a sign of respect, to bow very time you pass by a temple. Presbyterians opposed but had to give in. Massive increase in protestants evangelical : inerrant literal bible, conversion experience, personal relationship to god, prevent proselytizing (spreading out to others) In a span of 9 years, approx 9000 churches/ pastors were formed. Korean christian overseas mission: 2nd largest in world after usa.
