Bourdieu"s framework of capital = argued that an important part of socialization is the acquisition of. Forms of capital that are of value later in life * not the winning that counts but playing the game. High school sports = provide for the acquisition of skills used in later life. Ex: higher annual incomes than those not participate. Ex: continued activity involvement = participate in sports in later life. *sports not cause effects so cannot make any conclusions about effects of playing interschool sports w/out knowing context in which sport participation occurs. *sport participation = cannot be understood apart from social meaning. *both exist so not definitely positive or negative. Ex: 10-12 yrs to see change from playing hs sports. High school sport: in 1961 = us male high school students found to value athletics > over academics, in 1967 = canadian students did not fit same profile in later research *academics > athletics.
