GEOG 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Oral Rehydration Therapy, Social Disorganization Theory, Income Distribution
Document Summary
Film looks at urbanization and the health consequences of living in urban environments. The process of urbanization is essentially irreversible a ratchet effect. Urban centers can contribute to negative health outcomes, but they often get a bad rap but this is not so much a function of urbanization as it is of increasing inequality within in urban centers. When agricultural land and associated occupations are not longer viable, rural inhabitants have no choice but to move into cities in search of work. Cities create a conglomeration of people from a wide variety of different backgrounds, which can both create conflict and fuel inter-cultural exchange and creative thinking. Situate your observations with literature you find. Downside of urbanization (developed and developing) = loss of movement, increasing sedentary lifestyles. Organize the information for the reader in a table. Record what you do personally, but also what is happening around you.
