Intro to progressive era: 1890s-1920s, overlap with gilded age, the basic foundaion: atempts to impose order on modern america, looks at racism, gender discriminaion, era of social acivism and poliical reform at local state, and naional levels. Today: alternaive visions for modern america that helped to shape progressive era poliics and poliical culture: populism, socialism. Farmers" alliances became state organizaions, then fused into northern and southern. Blocks in 1880s: grew from city coaliions to enire states. Emerged as populist party (also called people"s party) in 1890s. Elecions of 1890 brought populists into power in a dozen of southern and western. States: involvement in state poliics, but not naional poliics. Emergence as third party in 1892: creaion of a naional party. Reading: omaha plaform: prongs of the populist party, finance monopoly, land monopoly, aboliion of transportaion monopoly. Wanted to buy metalism and a naional currency. Wanted silver added to the us economy (accepted as a coinage in addiion to gold)
