He was unsympathetic about black civil rights being important for reconstruction so a return to normalcy in terms of race. Citizenship and equality: new laws redefined a more inclusive version of citizenship, america"s first experiment in interracial democracy, what does this interracial democracy look like. African americans in politics: black political leadership emerged. Pressed hard for expanded rights of african americans: first time black men get elected into serious positions in the us, major transformations in the republican party.
