Document Summary

Primary source of the conflict is between britain and ireland. People of ireland form one nation, north/south is merely a regional division. Britain wanted ireland divided for it"s own advantage. Nationalist interpretation no longer views unionists as simple british puppets, but is still critical of britain. Even if it"s not one nation, should still be one state. North ireland has national/econ/religious reasons for wanting to remain in uk. Wanted to avoid living in staunchly catholic society. Irish republic had increased separation of church and state. Birth control, abortion, divorce, homosexuality slowly decriminalized, though things are still not liberal, per se. Northern ireland better off in uk than as part of united ireland. N ireland relatively underdeveloped, would be a great burden for irish republic. Though this argument fluctuates with the market. Primary source of the conflict if owners vs. workers. Southerners stirring up catholic nationalism in the north. Primary source of conflict is protestant vs. catholic in northern ireland.
