MGCR 222 Lecture 9: Chapter 9
Document Summary
Leadership is the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context. Strategic leadership refers to the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility, think strategically and work with others to initiate changes that will create a viable future for the organization. In formal leadership, a person holds a position of authority within the organization. They are expected to influence others and may utilize the power that comes from their position as well as their personal power to do so. Conversely, informal leadership does not have a formal position of authority within the organization. Rather, they emerge to occupy leadership roles and rely on being liked or perceived as highly skilled to exert influence. Coercive power depends on the fear of negative results while reward power achieves compliance based on the ability to distribute rewards that others view as valuable.
