Document Summary

Note: there"s variable region in both light & heavy chains. Both light & heavy have constant region as well. Antibody binding can do neutralization (to prevent virus from infecting host cell; or to prevent pathogen from being functional), but not always neutralization. Can bind to receptors on different cell types. Papain: an enzyme that cleaves the antibody; cuts it near the disulphide bond right across middle of the. y: resulting in cut antibody in 3 fragments. 2 fab fragments: with identical ag binding sites. Receptors that bind antibodies bind the fc region. Important to understand the structure of the antibody and how that relates to function. Cdr = complementarity determining region = the part that actually binds the antigen. Cdr are not part of -strand! (loop curve) We see 3 regions with much much higher variability => red spikes => these are the cdr. Here we see the cdr all at the same area, where antigen might be detectable.
