PHAR 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Adipose Tissue, Brainstem, Fentanyl
Document Summary
Phar 300 lecture 13 general anesthetics and surgical drugs. Surgical manipulations can be done on the body while unconscious. Covering three categories of surgical drugs: general anaesthetics, neuromuscular blocking agents, and local anesthetics. Acts primarily in the brain, because surgical procedures require the patient to be unconscious. Surgery and history of anesthetics: surgery is a relatively recent in the history of human medicine, large breakthrough in 1846 patients being anesthetized. This breakthrough came about because dentists were concerned about dealing with pain when pulling out teeth. If you didn"t pull out a person"s infected tooth, they would die from septicemia (blood poisoning) because there weren"t antibiotics at the time. They couldn"t just make a patient drink alcohol until they passed out very dangerous and lethal. One dentist discovered a drug that could safely render a patient unconscious. He administered diethyl ether to a patient and performed surgery on his neck the vitals were fine during surgery and he recovered well.
