PHIL 242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Intersectionality, Labor Rights, Evangelicalism
Document Summary
Mohanty: same time as early intersectionality; diff approach. Has two parts: critical/deconstructive part and a reconstructive part. This piece is a deconstruction piece; critical of logic of feminism/colonialism. Beginning of the constructive movement in this piece. Two main points: (1) attitude of feminist discourse towards 3rd world women has been problematic; she is homogenized/generalized/unified subject; (2) 3rd world is a construction against the 1st world; we construct an other/object to make self subject. Construction of the homogeneity of the other. Japanese and filipino are the main ethnic groups in hawaii. Co-construction of the other to make the more empowered self. Oversimplifies complex situations, limit possibilities for combating oppression. Sexual difference is constructed as a cross-cultural phenomenon that always oppresses women and privileges men; universalism. Construction of simplistic binary becomes a similar one between 3rd and 1st world. Western feminism needs to concern itself with this. Assuming something is natural keeps us from inquiring into the construction of it.
