A compensation that relieves us from slavery: set in equal position, not subject to anyone else, trying to transcend arbitrary power retain freedom through collective self-governance joined sovereign together. Hobbes: social systems where some are regular with a formal sovereign (corporation) Irregular system has no sovereign, just associations without proper structure (markets) Roman power, assumed for himself a power of emperor. Hobbes and rousseau concern that it creates bodies that claim sovereignty for itself.
