Document Summary
Since wwii civil wars have become much more prominent than interstate wars. For much of the 20th century there has been a rise in the number of states involved in civil wars. Not necessarily b/c number of civil wars increased but b/c civil wars have become more transnationalized and are not so self-contained within a state. Also speaks to issue of globalization and interdependence. Neoliberals look at interdependence as one of main causes for peace b/c it makes war very costly. But at the same time globalization and interdependence mean that domestic conflicts usually involve economic interests that are not restricted to domestic actors so foreign actors get dragged into domestic conflict. To be considered war a severity threshold must be passed as measured in battle- related deaths. When violent conflict reaches 1000 battle-related deaths, it is conventionally then defined as a war. Distinguished by the nature of its participants: at least one must be a non- state armed group.
