Palestinian national identity partially arose out of/in response to zionism. Palestinian national identity (khalidi: the years 1917-23 proved critical for the formation of a distinct palestinian national identity, the lack of a palestinian nation-state has proved critical in shaping overlapping "historical" narratives, rather than an official one, e. g. British colonialism/occupation: also helped form the palestinian diaspora, no "typical" story to the background of palestinian national identity. It has also prevented the emergence of a linear historical narrative culminating in successful statehood: check recordings, the palestinian narrative is "intimately intertwined" with that of israel and the jewish people (khalidi, p. 146) Nationalism (not rooted in religious identity but rather in ethno-linguistic identity: assad regime in syria still part of ba"athist stream, golden age 1950s and 60s of arab nationalism has subsided. Religious components of palestinian nationalism: there has always been in khalidi"s telling that even prior to the birth of arab national.
