Most famously, newton pushed the idea that light is a stream of: could not explain refraction very wll. Diffraction, on the other hanf, could not be explained by the theory: diffraction occurs when a propagating wave particles. In a box, put a stream with 2 slits. You don"t see 2 lines when you look in it, you see dots, not lines. Waves interfere: if the 2 peaks of the wave interfere, you have a new pattern. But if a peak interfere with a different part of the wave, the light can cancel itself. Each waves is associated with 2 fields: electrical, and a perpendicular magnetic one.
