There is, in fact, an animal model of what happens if you sever the nerve supply to a particular part of the body completely. Basically an animal model of phantom limb pain. What you do to make the model is by doing an axotomy. Axotomy = cut the axons completely that are sending sensory info from that part of body into the. Cns: what results is a behaviour called autonomy. Axotomy is the injury and autonomy is the behaviour. If you only cut one of them, you are only make a partial denervation. What is autonomy: what rats and mice do when you cut both nerves is biting off their toes.
