Believe that we could analyze social relations empirically to gain an understanding of how they work. Allow us to change social relation in the way we want to: marx created an ideology. His empirical work was full of his ideology, made it biased. His ideology has inspired people around the world, making marx one of the most influential figures ever to have walked on the earth. Dialectical materialism: much disagreement about marxist theory. A perspective used to make sense of the world, focus on contradictions. Suggest there are opposing, contradictory forces, that opposing forces interact, and that this interaction create a new force. Borrowed concept from hegel"s philosophies; present in greek thought, buddhism, hinduism. Belief that society is constantly changing due to conflict between forces and their antithetical counterparts. Underlying assumption: human is competitive, conflict is the basis of society.
