Number of divorces in a given year x 1000/total population in a given year = crude divorce rate: optimistically inaccurate, no children, singe or widowed ppl end up divorced so lower than real. Number of divorces in a given year x 1000/number of existing marriages = refined divorce rate: among marriages at risk, what portion are divorcing.
