Gender identity-how people internalize attitudes and expectations. Transgender- persons whose gender identity, gender expression, or behaviours does not conform to their sex assigned at birth. North america: transgender is an emotional/internal state (ex. trapped in the body of the opposite sex) Brazil: no desire to become women, they are enhanced men. Gender equality-behaviours, attitudes, and rights that support the autonomy of both men and women. Men and women may have different roles but these are equal, you do not have to be or do the same thing to be equal ex. Gender inequality-denial of autonomy and equal rights to one group of people based on their gender (pg 29) There is no society in which men and women are fully equal. Many cultures have become increasingly westernized via colonialism. Case study: marilyn strathern and mount hagen, papua new guinea. Women status is higher in societies where women"s work is responsible for providing large components for daily food intake.
