Depending on culture, may use these terms. Cause (evil eye, poor diet) i picked up a bacteria or bug. Vector (how transmitted, e. g. mosquitos, bad spirits) how we got ill in the first place. How people make sense of health problems. Cause = etiology (bacterial infection, the evil eye) Natural: effects of age, gender, heredity, personality. Psychosocial: anger & hostility cause of illness particularly angry person (karma) = temperament. Supernatural: spirits of unhappy dead can cause illness. Economic: lack of sanitation, or health services (less wealthy) Scientific understandings most of our etiologies is based on science. Excludes: structural suffering" don"t consider this: bigger picture. Health problems caused by poverty, war, famine, forced migration. People are ill due to their crisis content. Reason for having a bacterial infection is based on the bigger picture. Western culture doesn"t take in the big picture we focus on curing the specific infection: pills will fix you.
