ANTHROP 1AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Dental Caries, Exostosis, Tooth Wear
Document Summary
197-210: the study of the human skeleton in an archaeological context. How do we look at health: palaeopathology - study of health & disease in past populations, only those conditions that leave traces on the skeleton, patterns of illness & disease - relate to cultural aspects. Health - nutritional deficiencies: normal anatomy, rickets -> bending & fracture of bones caused by lack of vitamin d. Curve bones -> clear indication of having rickets. Looking for evidence for things like infection: abscess in a mandible. Big hole in jaw. caused by cavity: heavy tooth wear, dental caries (having a lot of time)- change over time. Increase in caries over time -> because natives started to consume a lot more corn. big shift in diet. How do we look at work? (e. g. activity markers) Look at ear hole: auditory exostosis ->being submerged in a lot of cold water, body tries to protect it by closing ear hole and producing bone.
