Rites of passage: term coined in 1908 by arnold van gennep. Victor turner (1950s-1980s: repetitive activity infused with symbolism. Rituals that accompany my changes in status/identity: can be secular or religious. Three stages of rites of passage: separation, liminality, & reincorporation. Often involves physical separation or isolation from a particular group. Can involve symbols of separation (cutting hair, wearing different clothes) Think of the military: bootcamps (physical, hair cut, uniform, etc. (symbol of separation) Think about how students are liminal beings . Develop a sense of communitas : feel of community; af nity with groups of people undergoing the same things as you. !1: ie. military - all new recruits are going through the same - often unpleasant - experiences with each other, forming a communal bond. When you are fully reintegrated into society with a new status/identity. Ie. becoming fully enlisted in the army - new uniform, title, etc.
