Document Summary

Gradual change in frequency of a trait or allele in populations that are spread over a large geographical area. Hypothesis have been made to explain evolution of dark skin and being near the equator/tropical environments. When modern humans migrated out of africa, began to occupy regions with low. Uv radiation high melanin as protection no longer needed. Lack of vitamin d can lead to soft or brittle bones. In environments with low uv radiation, dark skin would be harmful. Selective pressure for lighter skin where there is low uv radiation (away from equator) Photolysis: chemical decomposition caused by visible & uv light. Light skinned individuals have folate deficiency in areas of high uv radiation. Folate deficiency can lead to neural tube defects in infants. Moderately high skin pigmentation despite being away from equator. Zebrafish - what can it tell us about genetics: Researchers tried to find the gene responsible for pigmentation in this fish.
