Chronological age (ca): the number of years alive. Biological age (ba): physiological age (what we can estimate skeletally) Some older individuals can look younger and some younger individuals can look older. Difference between ba and ca increases with age. The younger someone is, the more their ca and ba match. Each sex has different rates of skeletal development and aging. Often (not always) need to know the sex of the skeleton when aging. Thing we look at to estimate how old a juvenile was: Tooth grows from the tip of the crown to root. Useful from birth to ~18-20 years of age. 2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 molars in each quadrant. 2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 premolars, 3 molars in each quadrant. Long bone length reflects growth in stature with age. Up to birth - linear relationship between age and long bone length. Observe the stages of bone growth and development.
