He didn"t put the year on the painting. Commissioned for the all-saints church, made for the high altar. Can no longer see the venue where it was created. This is a large scale painting hovering over the altar. Represents christ sitting on the lap of the virgin mary. Hand raised in a gesture of blessing, shown as a saviour. Altarpiece = a christian devotional image made specifically for the context of a religious altar space. Hieratic = used differing scales for figures (most important figures are larger than secondary figures) Foreground = the part of the scene that s closest to us as spectators. Angels hold symbols of the virgin mary. Has used overlapping to create an experience for us as viewers that feels natural. Cimabue"s make it looks like it is floating, there is not a large sense of depth. Extant = surviving, panel painting from this time period in italy. Folds of drapery and clothing are big details.
