Autumn colours on the qiao and hua mountains zhao mengfu - 1269. Represents the northern landscape of shandong province, the region where zhou mi was raised. As a hand scroll, the work was portable, and could be carried around, and he worked mainly in the south. The leaves in the trees are turning colours like in autumn and there are some domestic buildings in the trees. The artist visited the region where his friend was from, so he had first-hand experience with the landscape. However, he did capture the topical features of each mountain with great accuracy. His goal was to evoke memories for his friend. During the yuan dynasty, the hand scroll typically would not have been seen in its entirety as it is. The text and scene of the scroll were meant to be experienced in small parts now laid out on display at the national palace museum in taipei, taiwan.
