Chapter 13: art and play therapy with sexually abused children. Child abuse: silent victims through manipulative adults or situation beyond comprehension creates. Problematic" behaviours signals for need of protection: art therapy & play therapy offer opportunity for healing, facilitates communication, options to work through painful & complex emotional issues. Sexual abuse: literature has grown over 30 years, briere (1992) 7 major types of psychological disturbance present in most abused adolescents and adults post-traumatic stress cognitive distortions disturbance relatedness altered emotionally dissociation impaired self-reference avoidance. Symptoms: fear and anxiety: ptsd depression sexually aggressive behaviour. Freidrich (1995) encourages therapeutic focus on: the self attachment affective and behavioural dysregulation issues. Other issues experienced: sleeping disorders, eating disorders, low se, learning disabilities. Abused children make unique meaning out of their experiences and develop original defensive strategies in order to cope with and survive painful life events p. 176: do not make assumptions or generalizations.
