Evolution has replaced typological thinking saying that species are unchanging types (includes creationism) Lamarck (1809) acknowledges that species changed: thought it was teleological (goal-directed, proceeded through inheritance of acquired characteristics (we now know this is false) i. e. a mom that works out will pass those characteristics to child. Darwin & wallace: evolution through natural selection. Applications: resistance (by natural selection - variation among organisms: antibiotics/ bacteria; strain replacement (vaccine/ viruses, hiv drugs, insecticides, cancer & chemotherapy, intellectually deep & explains the world. Fossil: any physical trace of an organism that lived in the past. Extinction vs extant: when one species disappears; a similar one appears often in the same geological area, consistent with species evolution lizard -> sh fossils. Vestigial trait: info from extant traits a structure, often reduced with no (??) function that is similar to functioning striation in related species (i. e. tail bone in humans, appendix, wisdom teeth etc)
