Document Summary

Applied lecture for theme 5: module 1 and 2: nondisjunction and disease. Brief period of mitotic divisions of gametes and then enter into meiosis. Some cells undergo apoptosis, other stay in prophase 1 arrest. *eggs are in a state of arrest from prior to birth until now. Individual cells reenter and complete meiosis after puberty. After birth, male germ cells resume mitosis. Failure for homologous chromosomes to separate during meiosis 1. Sister chromatids fail to separate during meiosis 2. Or two chromatids to pass to separate cells during mitosis. Increased risk factor for female germ cells when cell resumes meiosis after being paused. In mitosis, can result in extra or missing chromosome (ex: cancel cells) Daughter cell having an extra copy of chromosome and another daughter cell having no chromosome of that gene. Ie: one cell has 2 copies of same type of chromosome (24 chromosome pairs) and the other has 22 chromosome pairs.
